Superfoods are a class of foods all on their own. As opposed to vitamins, minerals and supplements, superfoods are foods that have a naturally high concentration of important nutrients. They often contain key nutrients that support one another and prevent the kind of imbalance that can often occur when taking individual vitamin supplements.
In a perfect world we would be able to obtain all the nutrients our bodies needed from the food that we eat. The reality of the situation is that our soils are depleted, we are subject to a widespread of additives and excess sugar, our carbohydrates are regularly refined and we consume rancid vegetable oils. We are typically unwilling to give up our bad habits like alcohol, nicotine and caffeine and even though we are trying to make the effort to improve our diets, more is needed to combat the lack of nutrients in our food supply.
As a food lover and holistic nutritionist, I understand the struggle between eating a well rounded whole food diet - like the ones I recommend to my clients - and needing to “top up” the specific nutrients our bodies are lacking.. Supplements help with the later but no one should ever feel like they’re dining on pills. That is NOT the solution. Superfoods help us to increase our consumption of nutrient dense foods, without feeling like we need to abandon all the foods we love.
The Superfood Chronicles is about helping you to incorporate more nutrient dense foods into your daily meals. During the course of this month I will introduce you to 21 of my favorite superfoods, share how I incorporate them into my diet, explain the nutrients that give them their super powers and purchasing/storage tips.
